Understanding PCOS: What It Is and How It Affects Your Health

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects individuals with ovaries, typically during their reproductive years. Despite its prevalence, many people are unaware of the complexities of PCOS and how it can impact various aspects of health. At NeXendo Wellness, we aim to educate, support, and guide those affected by PCOS toward effective management and improved well-being. 1 in 10 women have been diagnosed with PCOS.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a condition in which the ovaries produce an unusally high amount of androgens, which are male hormones that are typically present in women in smaller amounts. The term "polycystic" refers to the many small cysts that can develop on the ovaries. However, not everyone with PCOS develops these cysts, which is why the condition can sometimes be misdiagnosed or overlooked.

Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS manifests differently in each person, and symptoms can vary widely in severity. Common signs and symptoms include:

Irregular periods: Infrequent, prolonged, or absent menstrual cycles are very common in PCOS.

Excess androgen: Elevated levels of male hormones can cause physical signs such as excess facial and body hair (hirsutism), severe acne, and male-pattern baldness.

Skin darkening: Dark patches of skin can commonly be found in folds on the skin such as the neck, armpits, and groin.

Polycystic ovaries:  Folicular Cysts on the Ovaries can occur and be detected via ultrasound.

Weight gain: Many people with PCOS experience difficulty managing their weight due to insulin resistance.

Infertility: PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility, as it affects ovulation and reproductive health.

Other symptoms may include mood changes, fatigue, and thinning hair.

How Does PCOS Affect Health?

The impact of PCOS goes beyond irregular menstrual cycles and fertility issues. Left untreated, it can lead to several long-term health complications:

Type 2 Diabetes: Due to insulin resistance, individuals with PCOS are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar levels, and resistance to it can cause elevated blood sugar, eventually leading to diabetes.

Heart Disease: Women with PCOS have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance.

Endometrial Cancer: The irregular ovulation associated with PCOS can lead to a buildup of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus), increasing the risk of endometrial cancer.

Sleep Apnea: PCOS increases the likelihood of sleep apnea, particularly in individuals who are overweight. This condition can lead to fatigue and further exacerbate issues like insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.

Mental Health: Depression and anxiety are common among people with PCOS due to the physical, hormonal, and emotional challenges crerated by the condition can take a toll on mental well-being.

At our wellness clinic, we believe in taking a holistic approach to managing PCOS. While there is no cure, several strategies can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Diet and Exercise: A balanced diet, rich in whole foods, and regular exercise can improve insulin sensitivity, help with weight management, and regulate menstrual cycles. Our clinic provides personalized nutrition and fitness plans tailored to each individual’s needs.

Medical Treatment: Hormonal birth control, anti-androgen medications, and insulin-sensitizing drugs like Metformin are commonly prescribed to manage symptoms of PCOS. Our endocrinologists evaluate your needs holistically to ensure that you receive the best possible medical care.

Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate PCOS symptoms, which is why we emphasize the importance of mental and emotional well-being.
